Please be careful! I noticed a comment that said, "only walnuts and pecans from now on" but walnuts are also toxic to dogs! My dog is suffering terribly from macadamia nuts as I write this and it has been over 48 hours. He hasn't eaten anything in two days and he vomits everything he ingests including water! I found this article on google scholar so it's a bit technical, but it has some great information on common household foods that are toxic to dogs and cats.

3 weeks ago my dog suddenly went ataxia, couldnt get up and behaving very odd, at this point i had not heard of macadamia nut poisiong, neither had my vet, we bgan to think it was a spinal bleed and referred to a vet specialist in bedford. he had very expensive test £ 2175 pounds later i got my dog back right as rein and no actual diagnosis, although i was grateful to all for what they had done. this weekend sitting in the vets with my tortoise i pick up a leaflet and read that macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs, well of course my dog had had the nite before his bout of paralysis some leftover macadamia nut roast mixed with his dog food, it all fitted the symptoms !!!! I am amazed and delighted it wasnt a spinal bleed, and relieved that i now know what it is and will certainly not be given him any form of leftovers ever again !!!

It is a strange poison that's for sure, say ten years ago macadamia nuts were quite rare in the UK so we were not taught much about it. These days though foods which were exotic are now available and some of them are toxic to pets.

Regards,

My doggie also ate about 6 macadamia nuts - he loves them - but he became very tender and hunchbacked in the hind quarters, with a swolen tummy.
I will never feed them to him again. Walnuts and pecans only from now on - LOL
