How To Make Your Dog Sick, Inducing Vomiting In The Dog.

How To Make Your Dog Sick, Inducing Vomiting [ Emesis ] In The Dog.

.Throughout my career I have know dogs swallow a variety of things they should not have.

Sometimes they have swallowed poisons such as rat bait and other toxins such as drugs intended for human use which were lying about the house. If you suspect this has happened one of the best things you can do is to immediately make your dog vomit and so recover the offending substance. This can be effective up to two hours after the event but obviously the sooner it is done the better, but how to do it best? There are a number of options …

1. Hydrogen Peroxide. This seems to be a very effective method, in the USA people commonly have this substance in their houses for use as an antiseptic. But you must be sure to use three percent peroxide and not hair coloring strength peroxide, take very good care on this point. It is possible that the label on a three percent peroxide may say that this substance is toxic this is not the case where it is properly used to make dog’s vomit. The dose of hydrogen peroxide for this purpose is one teaspoon { 5ml } per 10 pounds of your dog’s body weight given orally.  When you have given it walk your dog around gently and vomiting should occur within a few minutes. If no vomiting occurs after twenty minutes you can safely repeat the three percent hydrogen peroxide once more. If this is not effective and the matter is urgent consider having your vet get involved as he or she will have drugs which will induce vomiting.

2. Syrup of ipecac. This is another medication which may be in your home and is frequently used to induce vomiting in children. The merits of it’s use in the dog is divided, some vets consider not suitable for use in dogs but others use it orally at a dose rate of 5 ml per ten pounds of your dog’s body weight and report success. I would only use it if peroxide was not available but it may well work effectively.

.3. Older methods of inducing vomiting in a dog which have been used over centuries include the administration of salt water orally and table mustard diluted with water. While these remedies may work it is a bit of a hit or miss affair and you would only use them as a last resort where nothing else is available.

.Of course if you think your dog has swallowed something toxic then the first thing you should do is to call your vet who may advise you to use one of the above methods over the phone. However some dog owners can be in remote areas where for whatever reason no vet is available and in that case if a dog swallows a toxic substance the the owner promptly inducing vomiting could well be a life saver.
