Dogs are quite prone to diarrhoea, this is often caused by something they have eaten, often they are otherwise bright and normal. In this situation you might want to try and resolve the situation with diet alone. This is logical and often works, I advise my clients to do the following :

A. Starve your dog today but make sure it has access to water.

B. Tomorrow feed your dog four or five small light meals in the day. These meals should be the likes of chicken, fish, scrambled egg etc. with a little rice. Hopefully the diarrhoea should be starting to resolve.

C. If your dog picks up on this diet gradually reintroduce its normal diet over the next few days.

Also : Live yogurt added to the food can often help. Some gastro-enteritis situations are caused by an imbalance in the bacteria in your dog’s gut. Live yogurt is full of ” good ” bacteria and will seed them into your dog’s intestinal tract and restore the balance.

Of course if your dog’s diarrhoea does not resolve after a couple of days or if it starts to show other symptoms or if it becomes ill in any way you should consult your veterinary surgeon.
