The Affenpinscher dog breed originated in Germany, these origins are shown in it’s name Affe meaning an ape or monkey in German. { They are said to have a monkey like expression }. The breed was created to be a ratter, working to remove rodents from kitchens, granaries, and stables and they were so good at their work that they earned the nickname “little devil with a moustache.” It is a fairly old breed of toy dog as it dates back to the seventeenth century, then they were frequently kept around stables, on farms or in places where their job was to control vermin. However they soon were bred down in size and these variants became companion animals in the house and our present lines derive from there. Though they look and act like terriers they are actually classed as pinscher / schnauzer type dogs. In appearance they are a small dog, up to around six kg in weight and they have a a wiry coat, they should have a mane with shorter hair on the back. The colours include black, black and silver, black and tan and red but they should have a black mask. What is [...]

. The Bloodhound is a familiar sight in movies that feature escaped convicts. Although the sound of these big dogs baying as they find the scent they are searching for may be a chilling sound to an escapee, it can be a comforting sound. After all, Bloodhounds are also used to track people who are lost or disoriented. The Bloodhound, which is a member of the American Kennel Club’s Hound Group, stands twenty-three to twenty-seven inches tall and weighs in at eighty to one hundred ten pounds. These dogs are known for their long droopy ears and their gloomy looking wrinkled faces. They have short coats of coarse hair, which can come in black and tan, red, or liver and tan colors. Although criminals fear Bloodhounds, these dogs are actually too sweet to be used as guard or attack dogs. It is true that a Bloodhound will track down a man’s scent, but these dogs do not hunt people to hurt them. Bloodhounds need to work with handlers because they will rush right up to a hardened killer and great him like a long lost friend. While their gentle nature makes these dogs a wonderful choice for families, Bloodhounds do [...]

. Ever since Rin Tin Tin became a famous television personality, the German Shepherd has gone from an already popular dog breed to one of the most well known breeds on earth. This versatile dog breed seems to be everywhere that a dog can be of help, from war torn countries to areas where natural disasters have occurred. The powerful German Shepherd will strike terror in the hearts of criminals one minute and endure the overly affectionate attention of little children the next. German Shepherds were bred to be guardians and the breed still has a very strong protective instinct. A dog that is high strung or nervous should never be bred, as the resulting puppies can be untrustworthy. However, most German Shepherds are wonderful dogs and devoted to their families, including children and other pets. The German Shepherd is a fairly large dog, weighing from sixty to seventy five pounds and standing twenty two to twenty six inches tall. This breed has erect ears, dark, intelligent eyes, and a graceful tail. The German Shepherd is most commonly black and tan, although gray and tan or black and gray dogs are also available. A striking all white dog, commonly called [...]

The Airedale Terrier is not an old breed, it is thought to have originated about a hundred years ago in the country of York in the UK from a breed known as The Ancient Working Terrier. The breed is also known as the “The King of Terriers,” the Airedale was named after the Valley of the Aire in England, where lots of small game flourished back then. It was originally known as the Waterside Terrier and used as a vermin hunter. However the breed was later crossed with the Otterhound to make a better swimmer and this produced the dog we know today. In addition to his normal terrier role as in the UK the Airedale Terrier has been used to hunt big game in Africa, In India and Canada it has had the role as a police dog and during World War II they were used by the military as sentry dogs. However it is fair to say that today the Airedale Terrier is primarily a companion dog or pet dog. Appearance The Airedale Terrier is a medium-sized, well-boned, squarely-built dog, and at all times a terrier in appearance and attitude. Character The Airedale Terrier is a [...]

. The Saint Bernard has always been a favorite breed, but never more so than it is today, especially in the United States. Over the centuries, this great big “teddy bear” dog’s main claim to fame has been the miraculous rescuing of victims lost in the European Alps. Ever since Barry, the world’s most famous Saint Bernard, set a record for having saved over forty lives, this dog has been revered by all who appreciate the remarkable ability of these faithful working dogs. The stories of their heroism brings hundreds upon hundreds of tourists annually to the Hospice in Switzerland, the land of their origin. Their heritage dates back to the days before Hannibal crossed the Alps with his herds of elephants and warriors. The dogs at that time were more like Mastiffs than the Saint Bernard as we know it today. These Molossian dogs, which were used in the ancient wars, were often left behind in the mountains by the Carthagians and the Romans when they moved on after their battles. When they bred with the local mountain dogs a new breed appeared which eventually evolved and became a Saint Bernard. Their rescue work is depicted in oil paintings [...]
