The Scottish Fold cat is also known as the Highland Fold, Scottish Fold Longhair and Coupari. This breed is not for everyone because of their appearance and the fact they come from a small gene pool and like all such breeds can have inherited defects, in this case Polycystic Kidney Disease, Cardiomyopathy and Osteochondrodysplasia. The history of the breed is that all Scottish Fold cats can trace their family lines back to the original Scottish Fold called Susie, who was found on a farm in 1961. She gave birth to two kittens that also had the characteristic folded ears, one of these kittens was then bred from and the existing breed came from there. One was acquired by a Mr William Ross, a neighboring farmer to Susies’s farm, Mr Ross registered the breed. The characteristic folded ears of this breed are a result of a dominant gene and so this attribute is passed on easily. Not all Scottish Fold cats give birth to kittens with folded ears so there are two distinct lines of offspring but the ones with straight ears cannot be considered Folds. The one characteristic to mark a Scottish Fold Cat is the folded ears, [...]

For many years, cats have taken care of their own breeding. The original use of cats was pretty much the sole purpose of rodent elimination. With further domestication, humans began to breed cats to fit our other needs, much as we did with our other companions, dogs. If looked at closely, you can see many different breeds of cats today. Cat registries have identified and recognized over 70 different breeds of cats today. Some of the breeds have historical roots. The Japanese Bobtail for example can be traced back more that 1,000 years in history! They were a common breed throughout Ancient Japan. They are now just a myth throughout the world as well as Japan. North American breeds like the Persian, Long Haired and Alley Cat are common names. The sometimes foul tempered Siamese Cats is yet another common breed. They are also known to be sometimes destructive as well. Persians on the other hand are known to be slightly more loving and better companions. The cost of a Persian Cat however can be quite high. The most common cat in the Americas is the Alley Cat. Although referred to to as “Alley Cat” in general, [...]

The history of the Rag doll cat breed is that they first originated in 1960′s from a ” moggie ” cat in the United States. A lady called Ann Baker had a kittens via this ” Moggie ” cat and decided because of their affectionate nature and beautiful appearance that they were worthy of their own breed and created the Rag Doll breed. Ann also created her own cat registery, The International Ragdoll Cat Association and she actually succeeded in trade marking the name Rag Doll. In 1981 the first breeding pair was exported to the UK, they were 6 month old kittens belonging to Lulu Rowley owner of the Petil-lu Cattery. While the mother was still in quarantine a litter was born on the 26th July. Lulu and her friend Pat imported another eight rag doll cats to help expand the gene pool for this breed. Rag dolls are floppy creatures and very docile in temperament hence the name, however modern breeder are attempting to breed out this docile trait as they feel it might not be in the best interests of the breed. They are most famous for their temperament, which is that they are often extremely [...]

Today let’s cover another cat breed the Turkish Van, the characteristic which is commonly known about this breed by the general public is that they love water and are said to be able to swim and perhaps some of them can, beyond that the average person will known little more about them. By the way their name may well be connected with lake Van which is the largest lake in Turkey and of course this would go some way to link to their love of water. So beyond them being swimming cats what else is known about them? They are in fact a rare and ancient breed of cat and cats similar to Turkish Vans have been pictured on ornaments dating as far back to 5,000 B.C. This breed did not just originate in Turkey but can be found in a large area which includes the modern countries of Iran, Iraq, and Syria as well as parts of modern day Turkey. Legend has it that cats similar to Turkish Vans were brought back to England by the Crusaders on their return from the Holy Land though they were at that time called Ring Tailed Cats or Russian Cats. These [...]
